Captain Mykel McMurren Sr. was born in Fayetteville, NC. He grew up as a military child living in various states as well as overseas in Germany.
Captain McMurren Sr. has approximately 17 years’ experience in Corrections and Law Enforcement. In 2007, he worked at the Florida Department of Corrections at Martin Correctional Institution in Indiantown, FL. In 2012, he was employed by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office before joining the Martin County Sheriff’s Office later that year.
In 2014, as a deputy, Captain McMurren Sr. transferred from working in the jail to Road Patrol. While working on the road, Captain McMurren Sr. enjoyed the aspect of investigating crimes, so he transferred to the Criminal Investigations Division. In 2018, Captain McMurren Sr. was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was transferred back to Uniform Patrol Division. In 2020, Captain McMurren Sr again transferred back to the Criminal Investigation Division but this time as a Sergeant over the Economic Crimes Unit. He oversaw cases that ranged from check frauds to exploitation of elderly citizens.
In 2021, Captain McMurren Sr. was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant at the Martin County Corrections Department. The following year, he was promoted to Captain of Administrative Services at the Corrections Department, which includes Classification, Food Service, Outside Maintenance, Transportation, Support Services, Inmate Commissary and the Medical Unit. He is currently a member of the Martin County Drug & Alcohol Abuse Awareness Committee and the Martin County Public Safety Coordinating Council.
Since being employed at the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Captain McMurren Sr. has obtained his Associates and Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice at Indian River State College. He is married to his high school sweetheart and has three children.
